WHERE CAN I STILL SMOKE IN ARIZONA?

I have received a lot of calls and fielded a number of questions this past week asking if smoking will still be permitted at the King.  The answer is YES!  You can still smoke at the King, but some of your other options may be limited soon.  As many of you may know, our fellow citizens passed 2 of the 3 anti-tobacco measures on the ballot in the recent election.  So what exactly does that mean for me, you may ask?  Well, I’ll tell you here, and there’s some good news and some bad news.

The good news is you can still smoke at The Cigar King.  In the last year we have spent a lot of time and effort in upgrading the facility to provide our customers with the most comfortable environment in which to enjoy a fine cigar and relax with other lovers of the leaf.  We have extended our outdoor patio, and we will be adding heaters to help you stay warm on those cool Arizona winter days and nights.  Additionally, we are preparing for the hot summers, too.  We have extended the mister system to run all along the building, and we will be adding outdoor air-conditioning as well.  These additions should make both the indoor and outdoor smoking lounges the perfect places to relax and light up your favorite stogie!

Now, unfortunately, there is a bit of bad news too.  It’s a two parter, and some of this information may get your head spinning or send some proverbial smoke billowing from your ears.

First, beginning May 1st, 2007, there will be no more indoor smoking in restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, sports arenas, and the like.  That means no more cigars with or after your steak dinner in the bar at Mastro’s or Morton’s.  But, if one of these locations currently has or creates an outdoor patio that has sufficient ventilation and is far enough from the entrance to a non-smoking facility, they may still allow smoking outdoors.

And then there’s part two of the bad news.  Effective January 1st, 2007 tobacco taxes on cigars will be increasing from $0.13 per cigar to roughly $0.22 per cigar.  It’s a pretty substantial increase, but it could have been worse.  Arizona is still a low-tax state when it comes to cigars.  For example, the state of California has a 47% tobacco tax on cigars; Illinois has a 26% tax per cigar,  and the state of Washington is 120% with a $0.50 per cigar cap.  So while none of us are thrilled that tobacco taxes are going up, it could have been worse.

So to recap, you can still smoke at the Cigar King.  None of these propositions will affect your right to smoke at the Cigar King.  And until May 1st, 2007 you can still smoke at your favorite bar, restaurant, or wherever you were smoking before.  Also, tobacco taxes will be going up on cigars effective January 1st, 2007.

So what we have is a little salt and pepper, a little good and bad.  Lucky for us that we live here in Arizona where the weather is fair and smoking outdoors isn’t so bad.

Remember - It’s good to be at the King!

when the smoking ban goes into law can the KING be turned into a private smoking lounge???? I know that in Texas a lot of things that were not allowed openly can be circumvented by charging a membership fee to enter ($3.00 a month) or whatever, then it is no longer a public place. a bar can not do this because it is a licensed premises and other rules applied there. A private smoking club could be a money maker, sell cigars and charge for a place to smoke them...

Thank you for your comments.  When the new law goes into effect, the King will still allow smoking indoors.  So, there will be no membership fees.  It will still be free of fees and open to come and enjoy a stogie here at the king.  Thanks!

Great blog...well done Josh! One of your MANY talents. Speaking of which, you have certainly rocked my world by turning me on to the "Felipe Gregorio - Pello de Oro". This stick defines the adjective "complex". What a great flavor and sensational smoke. This stick should proudly be placed among the Padron Anniversarios & Davidoff special R.

I can't believe what is happening to our country. I agree that while dining, the worst addition to my meticulously prepared, robust flavored meal would be a streaming line of tobacco smoke. However, as a customer it is my freedom to choose whose meal I wish to enjoy. If it happens to be a venue which allows smoking it should be left to my discretion whether I dine there or not. As for the restaurant, my peers (voters) should not have the right to dictate how I run my business. If you are offended by smoke... don't eat at my restaurant!!! If it's rising health care cost due to people who smoke, make them exempt to government supplied health care. The greatest freedom we possess is free will. Let us be responsible for our decisions and actions.

They can pass all the laws that they want, as long as I can still enjoy my "sticks" at the King, then life is good. I often enjoy a smoke on my patio, but at the King with a self provided scotch and good conversation, I'm set. Thanks to the King.

The smoking ban in CA. effectively destroyed a cigar & martini commradarie my buddies and me greatly enjoyed after a workout, at the 19th hole, target practice, etc.. Outdoor patios, water misters, heaters and lawn chairs don't come close to replacing the relaxed ambiance of a nicely appointed saloon.
In my opinion, our society will vote to go back to the reasonable middle after a swing to the far right or left. I'm for advocating a radical ban on valet and motor vehicle parking lots that serve any establishment that has an AZ license to serve alcohol. That means airports, ballparks, sports venues, county fairs, golf courses, fine and not so fine dining and watering hole establishments. Your car and other drivers don't know what your blood alcohol level is. You don't either until the police test you. The rally cry might be; "Say goodbye to DUI."
