Cigar King Rocky Patel CKRP54 Robusto Cigar Review

Rocky Patel has been a friend of Cigar King’s for many years now, so when we approached him about creating a special blend for the store, he jumped at the opportunity. We worked for nearly 8 years to find the right blend for our customers and this was finally what came to fruition. Using a Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper that took us years to locate in abundance, we were very excited when we finally were able to bring this to the market. Blended to be full bodied and full flavored, this wasn’t intended to be a cigar for the person new to the hobby. Coming in just 3 sizes with all of them being a 54 ring gauge, you have the choice of a 5 inch robust, a 6 inch toro, and a 7 inch Churchill. With them all being a 54 ring gauge, the flavor from size to size will be the same, it is just a matter of how much time you want to dedicate to your smoke. With some of the history covered, lets get to some of the specifics.

CKRP 54 Robusto

CKRP 54 Robusto

Size: Robusto 5×54

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro

Binder: Honduran

Filler: Nicaraguan

Strength: Full

Flavor: Full

Price: $6.95/stick or $88.95/box of 20

Appearance: The wrapper on the CKRP 54 is a beautiful chocolate brown color with some slight oils to it. There are some small veins running the length of the cigar as well as a slight tooth to the wrapper. The triple cap is applied near perfectly and the seams are near invisible from top to bottom. The band is a deep red color with gold bordering and CKRP presented in gold foil. There is a faint RP logo in the background across the entire band, creating a simple yet elegant detail to the overall design. The cigar is spongy as it should be, not overly soft without any hard spots.

Pre-Light Aroma: When pressing the foot to my nose, the CKRP 54 presents notes of cocoa sweetness, a slight grassy aroma, and a very faint nose tingling spice. The wrapper is very earthy in aroma with hints of leather, hay, and an earthy sweet scent. As usual, I use a simple straight cut on the cigar and test the draw. It is open and easy with little resistance and presents big flavors before it is even lit. The flavors come through in spades, with cocoa and spice dominating the palate, leaving a lingering taste on the lips as well.

Once the cigar is lit, it absolutely pours smoke to my palate with loads of flavor on the tongue and through the nose. The mouth is filled with cocoa and black pepper, a sweet and spicy combo I have loved in a cigar for a long time. The nose is earthier in aroma with notes of leather and hay coming through mostly. The strength of the CKRP 54 is definitely medium-full right off the bat and is building towards a bigger note before the first third ends. The ash doesn’t hold real strong, though it does last nearly an inch before it begins to fall. The burn line is spot on without any touch ups, burning even all the way through the first third. Towards the end of the first third the earthiness picks up, pushing the spice out of the profile and leaving the cocoa to the back end of the palate.

Into the middle third of the CKRP 54, the earthiness continues to dominate the palate with the spice and cocoa coming through at different points. It is an interesting combo, going from sweet to spicy and back again, all with the earth still present as well. The strength has reached the full bodied point by now and shows no signs of slowing down, though it is balanced well with the intensity of the flavor profile. The burn line continues to remain constant with the ash holding for just over an inch before I tap it off to avoid any burn holes in my shirt.

The final third of this robusto CKRP 54 is very similar to the middle third, with the cocoa and spice coming through while the earthiness dominates the profile. It’s a great combination to finish with and I am glad it remained constant in this portion of the cigar. The CKRP 54 definitely finishes full bodied, as strong as anything Rocky currently produces in fact, something to keep in mind before you light one up. Rocky makes a lot of great product and this is no different in that regard. However, this is much different than anything he makes; the flavor profile is unique and not one I have found in another of his products. The intensity of those flavors when paired with strength makes for a wonderful experience. To order this cigar, feel free to call us at 800-669-7167 or click here.
