Tom being egoistical here. It's true that he's the reason right for being reluctant to give up smoking inside his office (he's got a life after all) but on ethical grounds it's not smart to smoke while you are holding an office of repute. Ellison shouldn't have called the police when the matter could have been settled with mutual understanding. We can't make environment just to keep up with our so called lifestyle. I don't support Tom's argument by the way.

Great read, but the truth is we face a situation close to what was faced during proabition. Soon Big Brother will step in and tell us how to live because it is good for us and we are incapable of clear thought. They rationalize that no one would choose to smoke a cigar unless they were incapable of weighing the risk factors. Frustrating to say the least.

guys i hate to say it but we are faced with a fight not from non smokers but from big pharmaceutical companies they want to sell ship oads of nicotine replacements like nicorette they are the ones financing\=g these bans so they can make millions from mthe sales of their products we now need to get people that are in office that smokem to help us fight back the only way we can win and still use a legal substance like tobacco is fight and fight hard , these people are trying to instill a new prohibition on us , they dont want tobacco out lawed they just want excuses to make us pay nthru the nose to use a legal product , this country was founded on money from tobacco sales if it hadn't been for that money the united states wouldn't have been able to fight the english off , so now we need to use the same money again to fight off these big corporations we do have voting power and we need to use it and we also need to lobby the hell out of them . me for one am getting tired of being the first person states go to when they need more money then to have them tell me that i cant use what they want to tax me for using , when will they wise up if they lose us as a tax base then where will they go next for the money nthey need duh they will have to tax something that non smokers use like that big bottle of chardonnay ya think
the only way to win is band together as we in washington state have we gopt the tax on cigars lowered by lobbing and protesting same in Oregon state

The smoking ban in CA. effectively destroyed a cigar & martini commradarie my buddies and me greatly enjoyed after a workout, at the 19th hole, target practice, etc.. Outdoor patios, water misters, heaters and lawn chairs don't come close to replacing the relaxed ambiance of a nicely appointed saloon.
In my opinion, our society will vote to go back to the reasonable middle after a swing to the far right or left. I'm for advocating a radical ban on valet and motor vehicle parking lots that serve any establishment that has an AZ license to serve alcohol. That means airports, ballparks, sports venues, county fairs, golf courses, fine and not so fine dining and watering hole establishments. Your car and other drivers don't know what your blood alcohol level is. You don't either until the police test you. The rally cry might be; "Say goodbye to DUI."
